Oh, No It Ain't!

With the symptoms established, it is time to discuss many myths and misconceptions regarding autism. Check back often to see if you can see a familiar falsehood.

Autism Is Not:

*Mental Retardation
*A lack of discipline
*Something induced by poor parenting
*Induced by lack of being around family members or other old wives' tale.
*Something that is controllable or preventable by parents.

Misdiagnosis occurs when the child is diagnosed as having problems that stem from the symptoms of autism. Because autistic spectrum disorders are so obscure, it can be difficult for a physician to properly diagnose the condition. That is why it is imperative that parents find professionals who have experience with autism.

Common Misdiagnoses Are:

*Hearing Loss
*Vision Loss
*ADD
*ADHD
